This article is the English translation of the Spanish original: GARCÍA COUTO, Miguel Ángel, 2025. Walter Findeisen y la microfísica de nubes. In: Calendario Meteorológico 2025, pp. 289-296. Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET). Madrid. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11765/16385es_ES
Cloud microphysics is basically concerned with studying the conditions necessary for the formation of cloud droplets and their subsequent growth to give rise to precipitation. It is one of the most complex fields of study in meteorology and in which the notable historical contribution of three eminent scientists who developed their activity in the 20th century stands out: the Germans Wegener and Findeisen, and the Swede Bergeron. In the context of the birth of cloud microphysics, this article focuses especially on the figure of Walter Findeisen, a young German meteorologist who died prematurely during the Second World War. Little-known details about his life are provided, including two previously unpublished photographs kindly provided by the German Meteorological Service.es_ES
