Clasificación climática de Trewartha en la España peninsular y Baleares entre 1953 y 2022

Abstract

[ES] Analizamos la climatología de la España peninsular y Baleares mediante la clasificación climática de Köppen-Trewartha (KTC) empleando datos entre los años 1953 y 2022. El lapso de tiempo se divide a saltos de década en cinco periodos de treinta años. La clasificación KTC busca ajustarse con precisión a entornos áridos, a la vez que distingue fielmente entre entornos húmedos y mediterráneos en zonas subtropicales, si bien peca de falta de esa distinción en ambientes templados. A partir de datos mensuales y anuales para un total de 3.668 estaciones, se calcula la climatología KTC y se representan las estaciones y su clima en una serie de mapas temporales, que se comparan para evaluar la evolución temporal de la climatología en el área de estudio. Descubrimos que se ha producido una expansión del dominio climático subtropical a expensas del templado, mayormente en la Submeseta Sur y en partes de la costa norte. La aridez ha incrementado, de forma más notable en la Depresión del Ebro, donde la zona árida se ha duplicado y constriñe al ámbito templado, que solo aumenta en zonas de alta montaña. Los cambios en los climas reflejan la tendencia climática observada y coinciden en gran parte con otros estudios similares sobre clasificación climática en España.

[EN] We analyze the climatology of peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands through the use of the Köppen-Trewartha climatic classification (KTC) employing data between the years 1953 and 2022. The timespan of the study is divided by decades in order to produce five 30 year-long periods. The KTC classification aims to fit arid environments more precisely, while establishing a clear distinction between humid and mediterranean environments in subtropical zones, albeit it lacks such a distinction for temperate environments. Using monthly and annual data for a total of 3,668 weather stations we calculate KTC climatology for each of them and visually represent the stations and their climate for each of the periods in order to evaluate the temporal evolution of the region’s climate. We discovered the mediterranean domain has grown at the expense of the temperate one, mostly in the Southern Subplateau and partes of the north coast. Aridity has increased, most notably in the Ebro Depression, where the arid zone has more than doubled, and restrains temperate environments, that have only expanded in high elevation areas. Changes in climate type reflect observed climatic changes in the study region, and fit well with other climate classification works in Spain.
