Presente y futuro de los sistemas de nowcasting europeos

Abstract

According to the WMO, nowcasting is considered as forecasting with local detail, by any method, over a period from the present to 6 hours ahead, including a detailed description of the present weather, and is the last line of defense in the prediction of severe phenomena. Traditionally, each National Meteorological and Hydrological Service, NMHS, has approached nowcasting techniques and systems differently. Since 2013, EUMETNET, a consortium of European NMHSs, has promoted a program, called E-NWC, for exchanging experiences and knowledge in nowcasting. This presentation, led by a member of the E-NWC Expert Team, explores diverse strategies employed in nowcasting systems, both those aimed at convective objects and those aimed at fields, either from radar, satellites or lightning detectors. The discussion concludes by reviewing the advancements in seamless nowcasting systems currently under development within different NMHSs.
