Avaliação do regime da seca na África austral

Abstract

Drought is an extreme precipitation event characteristic of all types of climate. The extent of the consequences of drought depends on the type and class of drought, but the lack of water always impacts human and natural systems. Southern Africa is particularly affected by drought, but there are no studies that describe the drought regime for this region completely. Therefore, this study aims to carry out this characterization. In the first phase of the project, the drought regime was characterized with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) meteorological drought indices. Results obtained for SA and for the different drought descriptors calculated with total monthly precipitation data from ERA5 for the long period of 50 years from 1971 to 2020 will be presented and discussed.
