O programa FRESAN no sudoeste de Angola: as estações meteorológicas automáticas

Abstract

The data measured in Automatic Meteorological Stations (AWS) are fundamental information for mathematical forecasting models in meteorology, to prepare surface analyses, forecasts, weather warnings, climatology, climate change, etc. Africa is one of the regions of the world that has a low AWS density compared to other continents. The FRESAN program is financed by the European Union and co-managed by Camões - Institute for Cooperation and Language, I.P., and has the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) as a technical partner. One of the activities from the program has promoted the installation of six AWS in the south-west region of Angola. These AWS are currently in operation, recording data that will start to be made available on a public consultation agrometeorological platform and is expected to contribute to the improvement of the numerical forecasting models. Data from this AWS are freely accessible and support agricultural development in southwestern Angola.
