El mar de fondo del sur en Canarias

Abstract

The phenomenon of the southern swell in the Canary Islands has its origin in austral latitudes, essentially vinculated with lows in the Southern Hemisphere. Waves arrive to the coasts of the Canary Islands with a combination of height and period that can transmit a lot of energy. Although in an absolute scale such energies do not reach the values of the deep lows in Northern Atlantic, the phenomenon is unexpected and it has a very unusual direction, so it creates personal and material damages in the Canary Islands. This work tries to make a description of the southern swell in the Canary Islands and show the behaviour of models, using data from wave models (ECWAM and AEWAM) along with data from a buoy of Puertos del Estado located at the south of the island of Tenerife.
