Estudio de campo de los tornados del 14/12/2022 en Rota y Jerez. Análisis de los daños con la nueva escala IF (International Fujita Scale)

Abstract

Extreme wind phenomena, such as tornadoes and downbursts, are generally of convective origin and limited spatial and temporal scope, and therefore very difficult to identify and characterize with instruments’ measurements only. It is necessary to carry out field studies, following an adequate methodology that allow us to distinguish the type of phenomenon and estimate its intensity, as well as generating products that can be stored in databases and facilitate subsequent studies. This work shows the field study carried out for the tornadoes on December 14th, 2022 in Rota and Jerez de la Frontera as an example of the use of a complete and appropriate methodology. The damage has been reanalyzed using the new International Fujita Scale, which can provide significant advantages for estimating wind from observed damage in Spain.
