Abstract

The Indian monsoon is highly responsible for the very dry and hot summer climate in the Mediterranean area and the adjacent eastern Atlantic, and specifically for the vertical movements, mostly downward, and for the low-level pressure fields. Numerous studies have documented the covariability of the Indian monsoon and ENSO, which manifests itself in the Indian monsoon generally being weaker during summer El Niño events. This variability of the monsoon is manifested in the atmospheric circulation over the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic. This communication shows on summer there exists a high sea level pressure-ENSO correlation over the Atlantic area next to the Strait of Gibraltar. what implicates that summers with a La Niña event are conducive to predominantly easterly winds in the Strait of Gibraltar region.
